...The wonderful world of the forest opened the very same moment I stepped into it. Dark and tall. And silent. I could swear I smelled incense. All these trees and leaves, moss and dry branches, all of them recognized me; I was their friend once and they asked me where I had been all this time. I didn’t really have an answer, but I asked some questions of my own: mostly about the light and the shadows, the shapes and the rhythms of the woods.

Our conversation was interrupted once in a while by sweaty, middle aged joggers or elderly dog walkers, by romantic couples, trying to hold hands and hike at the same time. My forest friends would quickly disappear, and once the intruders left, they would appear once again and continue to revoke our memories.

Unfortunately, I cannot describe how it happened when I met her for the first time. Most likely as surprised as I was, she quickly disappeared behind the closest bunch of leaves. After a while, shyly, she peeked out from behind a leaf and – as soon as she caught my gaze, vanished. Of course I completely forgot about the camera in my hands. It was such a short glimpse of time; she didn’t stay long enough for any type of study, so I can say nothing about her size or her wings (I do remember those), her face or her body. I don’t even remember if she flew or walked away… but the event engraved itself into my mind.

The “next gen engines” allowed more advanced visual treatment and created very exciting challenge for 3D artists, especially in lighting, shading and texturing areas. These are some examples of correct use of staging and mood...the character in the last image was blurred for the copyright reason.

Four years ago...

I’ve just returned to Canada from my little “European animation adventure” where I spent a few years designing and a directing art for a couple of animated feature films in Berlin. I was in the Toronto area doing some freelance while taking care of tomatoes in my garden when I got a phone call from my friend and colleague Dejan, who was working as a concept artist for a video game company in Vancouver. There was another concept artist job opening, so I packed my 25 years of animation and illustration experience, got an interview and a full-time job. At that time I was starting to get actively involved with playing games and from the point of, dare I say, a talented visual artist, I was very curious to see what that industry was about. I decided that the best way would be as an insider.

The project was “Crash”, a licensed IP that I wouldn’t place into the “hit project” category. The Xbox360 and PS3 were just released. Something new, “next gen games” were buzzing in the air and looked challenging enough to make me turn my back to animation, at least for the time being. I was hyped to have fun as a game creator.
And, here I was, in downtown Vancouver, in a condo on the 25th floor. Beautiful view, snow covered mountains, ocean below – with a joyful perspective of learning about the new industry...
